In order to connect to our AWS-hosted resources, you'll need to connect to the Sophos VPN.

Note: currently the only instances where you'd need to connect to the Sophos VPN are if you're 1) using a Mac, 2) using a personal PC, or 3) accessing resources in "outra-apps" (e.g., the API database)

Pre-Requisites

  • You have a domain account (e.g., tsmith)
  • You have configured Duo on your phone
  • You have admin access to your computer

Setup Steps

  1. Install an OpenVPN compatible VPN client such as:
    • The "Stable" version of TunnelBlick, (macOS only)
    • Viscosity (macOS or Windows, users must purchase their own license)
    • SecurePoint (Windows only, users should also install the "TAP Network Driver" manually from here)
  2. Download the VPN configuration file
    1. Log in to https://remote.outra.co.uk using your domain username and password and approve the Duo push notification you'll receive
    2. Click the "Remote Access" tab
    3. Click "Download" next to the file labeled "Click here to download the configuration file to set up SSL VPN on Linux, MacOS X, BSD or Solaris" (regardless of whether you're using a Mac or Windows)
  3. Install the VPN configuration file
    • For SecurePoint, open SP, click the Settings gear, and select "Import"
    • For TunnelBlick, open TB, and drag the configuration file into the app
    • For Viscosity, open Preferences, click on the + and "Import Connection"

Connection

The way you initiate a connection varies by the OpenVPN client you've installed—typically by clicking on the connection name. You'll be prompted for a username and password; use your domain username and password and wait for the Duo prompt.

A quick way to check that you've successfully connected is to try pulling up this page in a browser: http://outra-data-dd.outra.co.uk/
